SHIKHAR MAINS 2022- DAY 50 Model Answer English

What do the following quotation mean to you?

Our scientific power has outrun our spiritual power. We have guided missiles and misguided men." - Martin Luther King

Approach:

·        Begin the answer with a brief mention of the negative effects of scientific innovation on humans.

·        Further, explain how man is creating problems for himself like climate change, broken families, growing depression etc.

·        Then explain how spirituality can contribute to a peaceful life.

·        Conclude by mentioning the importance of spirituality and moral values in human life.

Answer:

At present we are manipulating our external environment with the help of science and technology. With the help of technological devices, life has become comfortable and easy. However, all these pleasures have not made our life peaceful or happy. Depression has become synonymous with modern life.

Unruly Men:

·        Every day there are reports of girls being raped and murdered, child prostitution and trafficking etc. Many times these cases involve people with money and power which shows that we are building a capitalist society but such a society is not created, where we can give a safe childhood to our children. Most importantly, we have not been able to inculcate sympathy, respect and a sense of justice in the hearts of the people.

·        We developed missiles and bombs to defend our respective nations. But we are yet to realize that exploitation of nature, decline in forest cover, disappearance of rivers, rising sea level and increasing intensity of floods and cyclones will endanger the existence of human beings.

·        Families are breaking up in the present time. The family is the basis of stability and stable society. Marital separation is painful for the life partner and devastating for the children. Statistics show that divorced people as well as their children are more likely to be victims of addictions than their married counterparts. The pain caused by the breakup of relationships is lifelong.

·        Drug addiction is increasing around the world. WHO statistics show that tobacco kills approximately 10,000 people worldwide every day, which is more than deaths from HIV, tuberculosis, maternal deaths, motor vehicle accidents and suicides worldwide.

·        The children of today's troubled, broken and drugged generation, along with being the leaders of tomorrow, will be the future of the world which is a matter of deep concern.

The need for the spiritual path:

Education:

·        Education in modern society is mainly focused on acquiring technical or other knowledge to earn a living. It only emphasizes the development of intelligence (the ability to remember and manipulate information).

·        Children educated in this way may be able to control the world around them with physical technology, but they miserably fail to control the world as they have no knowledge of spiritual technology.

·        Education should develop that intelligence which is capable of distinguishing between right and wrong, beneficial and harmful.

·        The emphasis should be on inculcating moral or spiritual values in education. It should focus on acquiring spiritual knowledge, which enables the student to understand the deadly nature of internal enemies such as greed, anger, lust and jealousy.

·        However, overcoming lust, anger and greed does not mean living a life without all desires or ambitions. Education enables the student to use his/her desires and talents positively in pursuit of his/her self-interest so as to attain lasting happiness.

Culture:

·        Modern culture is glamorized as success stories that embody lust (sexually attractive movie-stars), anger (action heroes) and greed (exploitative businessmen).

·        Modern media is promoting consumer culture and society is emphasizing material success. Lust, anger and greed are both fuel and fan within people.

·        Spiritualism teaches that man's happiness is not to satisfy any lust, anger and greed, but to that inner/self-realization which gradually destroys these inner enemies.

·        Humanity can learn from spiritualism. Life is not a rat race for money. Spiritualism enables the individual to utilize the material capacities inherent in satisfying and productive services in the society.

Spirituality can create a peaceful and harmonious society by making human beings honest, kind, considerate and selfless. Spirituality can also contribute to creating a society that will help use modern science to fight disease and poverty, and to help humanity to live in harmony with nature.

Approach:

·        In the Introduction, define emotional intelligence.

·        Further, Explain its various levels in detail.

·        Mention its role in administration and governance.

·        Conclude accordingly.

Answer:

Emotional Intelligence (EI) refers to the capability of a person to manage and control his or her emotions and possess the ability to perceive and manage the emotions of others as well. It includes following levels:

·        Perceiving emotions: The first step in understanding emotions is to perceive them accurately. In many cases, this might involve understanding nonverbal signals such as body language and facial expressions.

·        Reasoning with emotions: The next step involves using emotions to promote thinking and cognitive activity. Emotions help prioritize what we pay attention and react to.

·        Understanding emotions: The emotions that we perceive can carry a wide variety of meanings. For example, if your boss is acting angrily, it might mean that he is dissatisfied with your work, or he might have got a speeding ticket on his way to work that morning or he's been fighting with his partner.

·        Managing emotions: The ability to manage emotions effectively is a crucial part of emotional intelligence and the highest level. Regulating emotions and responding appropriately as well as responding to the emotions of others are all important aspects of emotional management.

Role of emotional intelligence in administration and governance:

·        Policy implementation: Public servants need to know emotions, moods and drives of persons at whom public policy is targeted for better acquaintance with the nature of problems in society and their possible solutions.

·        Stay composed under pressure: A public servant with high EI doesn't flare up or lose control under difficult circumstances.

·        Risk-taking: In a developing country like India, bold decisions are needed in discharging the responsibility of public services and EI enables this risk-taking amongst public servants without being erratic or extremely unpredictable in their behaviour.

·        Inspire a shared vision: EI helps a public servant in convincing others that he understands others’ needs and has their best interests at heart.

·        Challenge the process: An emotionally intelligent public servant strives for change. One of the key emotional intelligence skills that are needed in order to challenge the status quo is flexibility. Flexible people are more likely to try new things, take risks, and face new challenges without fear.

·        Enable others to act: EI helps a public servant in realising his self-regard and develop interpersonal skills, which help him in fostering collaboration and building trust with others. This trust enables sharing and delegation of power with others.

·        Motivating others: EI helps in realising the importance of rewarding people for their participation, which goes a long way in motivating them to be part of the team and carry out governance measures with more vigour and energy.

Public servants are the trustees of public interest and are entrusted to make and implement policies. Therefore, they need to be emotionally intelligent, because without EI it would be difficult to be empathetic to different sections of the society, to be firm in their approach, and to be good change agents.
